Steven Joe Igercic, 73, of Topeka, passed away on March 9, 2023 at his home.

He was born on March 22, 1949 to John and Delores (Trowbridge) Igercic in Los Angeles, CA.

Steven graduated from Shawnee Heights High School 1967.

Steven worked as a machinist for BNSF for 30 years before retiring. He loved watching sports such as football, baseball, and basketball. He also enjoyed NASCAR and wrestling. Steven was a family man that loved to spend time spoiling his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also loved the occasional trip to the casino, playing the slot machines and poker.

On June 3, 1967, he married Dianah Lobingier and together had four children. They later divorced.

On April 24, 1981, he married Brenda Igercic (Taylor). Together they had two children. Brenda preceded Steven in death on June 13, 2003.

Steven is survived by his children, Bradley Igercic, Timothy Igercic, Kevin Igercic, Stacy (Scott) Smith, Joseph (Selena) Igercic, and Jeffrey Igercic; siblings, Jimmy (Nancy) Jones, Pam (Skip) Puff, and John Igercic; grandchildren, Taylor Smith, Tanna Smith, Tagen Smith, Rebecca Igercic Greene, John Igercic Greene, Brendon Igercic, Gavin Igercic; and 7 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents and his brother, Chuck Jones.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Memories & Condolences

Steve was my newphew but only three years younger than I am. He and I were the first of a crop of cousins, and for my younger brother, Paul and me, nieces and nephews who were born in California. Steve's Mother, Dee and her sister, Pat, my half-sisters, moved to California along with my parents at the end of WWII. Both of my parents worked for Chrysler Motors building airplanes for the war and they rented a house on 80th St. in Los Angeles. Dee and Pat were teenagers and Dee eventually met Steve's father, a tall, slim, good looking, curly headed blond named Joe Igercic. I remember Joe as being a sweet guy who was always smiling, very much like Steve. By the time I started kindergarten at the age of four and a half, with Steve a toddler, my family was staying with Dee and Joe until Mom and Dad bought a house nextdoor to Pat and her husband, Dick, in Gardena, CA. Eventually, Dee and Steve came to stay with us in that house before they moved into a house a block away with Dee's new husband and Steve's brother, Jim, was born. In the meantime, Pat and Dick had babies, Cathy, Rick and John and after another move, not too far away, Dee gave Steve a sister, Pam. By this time my brother had come along. We had wild and large family gatherings for birthdays, holidays and just Sunday dinners and Steve loved playing with Paul and the rest of the gang. Being the oldest and a girl, I was inevitably put in charge of overseeing the playing and, hopefully, not too many fights that might be going on. Steve and I have talked about these old gatherings over the years, remembering the piles of Christmas presents that could take up half the living room of any house we were celebrating in. Eventually, my sister Dee and Steve, Jim and Pam all moved back to Kansas where she and my parents were from and Steve's brother, Chuck, was born. Over the years we didn't see each other as much until my son, Michael and I, eventually moved to Kansas. Steve and his then wife, Dianah, were instrumental in getting all of my earthly belongings at the time, moved from California to Topeka in a U-Haul through the desert, over the mountains and finally to Kansas. I will be forever grateful to them for that trip. Some years later, my family and I moved my Mother to Wichita from California and Steve and all his siblings and all of his and their children had gatherings, again, both in Wichita and Topeka with Grandma. Steve's sweet and quiet smile, that was usually in the background of any event, was never unseen and will always be in my heart.
