Emma Joan “JoAnn” Deckenbach, 90, of Topeka passed away on Thursday, November 17th. A native Topekan, JoAnn was born on June 22nd, 1932 to Bill & Bertha (Trahune) Langton. She graduated from Topeka High School, prior to attending Washburn University. JoAnn earned her degree in Nursing and worked as a Registered Nursed at multiple facilities. She retired from the Menninger Foundation in 1997.
JoAnn was a lifetime member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Topeka. She was known for her love of reading, cooking and board games, especially scrabble. In her garden, JoAnn loved growing her tomatoes and sharing them with friends and family. JoAnn enjoyed traveling with her family, taking many trips with her brother Don & his wife, Eleanor and her sister Sylvia & her husband, Larry Newman. From dancing to collecting albums, JoAnn had a lifelong love of music. She could recount many nights where she would listen to her husband play piano, and was a former bass player.
Preceding JoAnn in passing are her Parents; Brother, Jack Asher; Husband of over 60 years Pete Deckenbach; and her Son, Daniel Cummings. Also preceding her in passing are two Grandchildren.
Surviving JoAnn are her siblings; Don (Eleanor) Langton and Sylvia (Larry) Newman; Daughter, Nancy Cummings; Granddaughter Tracey Freeman; and 7 Great-Grandchildren.
The family will receive guests for Visitation on Wednesday, November 30th, from 11-12pm at Parker-Price Funeral Home, 245 NW Independence Avenue, Topeka. A Memorial Service will follow. Burial will take place at Rochester Cemetery.
