Maryetta (Herring) Teaford, 92, passed away Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at her home in Valley Falls, surrounded by her family. Maryetta was born April 18, 1929, in Homewood, KS, the daughter of Henry Earl and Kate (Wemmer) Herring (deceased).

When she was young, she lived near Burlington, CO. Her family farmed near Homewood, KS in Franklin County and Ozawkie, KS in Jefferson County. During the depression, her family lived in a corn crib on the farm before they could build a house. Maryetta married Richard Teaford in Ozawkie, KS, on August 20, 1950. They met in their sophomore year in high school and fell in love. They were married for more than 67 years. While Richard served in the Korean War, Maryetta traveled to Long Beach, CA to meet with him while he was in port.

Maryetta studied Home Economics at Kansas State University from 1947-1950 and stayed with Dr. Vale who was head of the Home Economics Department there. While at school, she served dinner to Dwight D. Eisenhower once and was complimented for her cooking. She was a teacher in the early 1950’s in the Rock Creek/Meriden area. She went back to Kansas State University in 1983 and studied Horticulture Therapy, earning a BS in Horticulture Therapy in 1987. She ran a nursery and Farm Market for many years and was a member of the African Violet Club and had a house full of African Violets when kids moved out.

Maryetta was preceded in death by her husband, Richard (1928-2018). She is survived by five boys: Rick (Diane) Teaford, Shawnee, KS, Mike (Jackie) Teaford, Topeka, KS, Pat (Michelle) Teaford, Mayetta, KS, Kris (Pam) Teaford, Prospect, PA, and Mark (Rhonda) Teaford, Valley Falls, KS; her brother-in-law Sid Teaford, Annadale, VA; 19 grandchildren: Henry, Phillip, Jacob, Ashley (Davis), Heather, Bryce, Sarah (Connor), Dallas (Connor), Mande (Hyre), Christopher, Christian, Daulton, Abbigale, Samantha, Jennifer (Manfuso), Katie (Manfuso), Robin, Brandon and Breanna; and twelve great-grandchildren: Gunner, Blaze, Chance, Brooke, Colton, Dakota, Lilly, Landen, Logan, Izayah, Jackson, and Haylee. She was preceded in death by brothers, Floyd and Eugene Herring; sisters, Bonnidell Herring (Senn), Opal Herring (New), Letha Herring (Rise).

Maryetta will be cremated and private services will be held at a later date.
