He was raised on the farm and graduated from Iola High School in 1954. He married Della Frances Boeken on November 26, 1955 in Iola and they stayed on the farm for a couple years in Iola before moving to Topeka in 1959.
Wally worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Topeka for more than 32 years, retiring in 1991. He served in the Kansas Army National Guard for 26 years, retiring in 1991. He later worked for K-Mart for 10 years. He was a member of the South Knollwood Baptist Church, having held positions of Sunday School Superintendent, trustee, deacon, greeter, and also sang in the choir. He was a member of the American Postal Workers Union, the Enlisted Association of the Kansas Army National Guard, and also was a regular blood donor for the Community Blood Center.
He is survived by his five daughters, Denise (Samuel) Underwood, Toni (Timothy) Chasteen, Cindy (Tom) Herrera, Randi (Patrick) Kilburg, and Jolene Crist; Sister, Karen Hardesty; 10 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; and a host of extended family.
Wally is preceded in death by his wife Della; Son, Galen W. McGie; Son-In-Law, Thomas Fillmore; Brother, Billy McGie; and Sisters, Barbara Kleir and Mary Jo Lear.
Visitation will be Thursday at South Knollwood Baptist Church from 9:00 am to 10:00 am, followed by Funeral Service starting at 10:00 am. Graveside service with military honors will follow at Osage City Cemetery.
