James M. File
1950 - 2020

Mr. James “Jim” Melvin File of Topeka, KS, passed away due to complications from a stroke on Monday, March 30, 2020 at the age of 69.

Jim was born to parents, James and Melba File on April 20, 1950 in Topeka, KS. He grew up as the youngest of three and attended Topeka West High School, graduating in 1968. Jim joined the Army National Guard Reserves and served from 1970-75. He became a lineman apprentice with Kansas Power & Light in 1970. Jim found his love and married Jolene Holthaus in 1976, and the couple had two children, Brian and Hilary.

In his work life, he took pride in being an electric lineman and worked through all weather conditions to help keep the electricity on in Topeka for 40 years. He was a proud member of IBEW local 304 union also acting as a steward. He retired from Westar Energy in 2010.

Jim found salvation in the Lord Jesus after their daughter, Hilary, died suddenly in a car accident in 1996. He joined the Assumption Catholic Church in Topeka and became a founding member of the Mother Theresa of Calcutta Catholic Church in North Topeka.

In retirement, Jim enjoyed working in “Pops’” detached garage with a myriad of tools and his favorite, the Grasshopper riding lawn mower. He was a true handyman that was always happy to help others to fix or build anything. Cruising the Las Vegas strip with Jolene and playing quarter slots became an annual tradition. He was a big KU sports fan and had much joy in watching his grandsons’ sporting activities.

Jim is survived by his wife, Jolene; son, Brian; daughter-in-law Allyson; his sister, Karen Lafferty; four grandchildren, Carter, Jack, Blake and Brooks File. He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Melba File; his sister, Linda Morstorf; and his daughter, Hilary Anne File.

In the midst of the current COVID-19 pandemic, there will not be any public viewing, memorial mass or reception at this time. His remains will be buried in a private service at Meriden Cemetery in Meriden, KS. The family plans to have a public reception and memorial mass at a date to be announced in the future. Memorial gifts can be sent to Jim File c/o Mother Teresa Catholic Church - 2014 NW 46th St, Topeka, KS 66618.
