He was born July 3, 1927, in Ellis, Kansas, the son of John and Minnie (Dietrich) Fries. He graduated from Meriden High School.
He was a US Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict.
Darrell was employed with GoodYear Tire & Rubber Co. for 36 years, retiring in 1989. He was also a lifelong farmer in the Meriden area.
He was a member of Arab Shrine, Orient Lodge No. 51, AF & AM, Moose Lodge, V.F.W. No.10815 in Meriden and past Vice President of URW Local 307.
On September 23, 1950 he married Emily Jean Kaberline in Topeka. She preceded him in death on November 4, 1989. On April 11, 1999, he married Joan “Jo” Miller in Topeka, she survives. Other survivors include two daughters: Claudia (Stanley) Wilson and Cynthia McCarvel, all of Topeka; two siblings: Irene West, Baldwin City and John Maynard (Joan) Fries, Topeka and four grandchildren: Darrell Jack (DJ) Wilson, Stephanie Wilson, Meagan McCarvel and Matthew McCarvel.
He was preceded in death by two infant daughters, Stephanie and Paula Marie Fries, three brothers, Harold, Jim and Bob Fries and five sisters, Theresa Boydston, Esther Weider, Maxine Vogel, Garna Cook, Charlene Sells.
Darrell loved dancing and his family.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am, Monday, December 3, 2018 at Parker-Price Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 245 N.W. Independence Avenue, Topeka. Interment with military honors will follow at Meriden Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday at the funeral home from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm.
