Sue Ann Rhoades, 77, Topeka, passed away Saturday, June 9, 2018.

She was born September 21, 1940, in Springfield, Missouri, the daughter of Derald and Gladys Patterson.

Sue attended Springfield schools and met her husband James Rhoades while working as a car hop. They were married on December 16, 1956.

Jim and Sue moved to Topeka in 1958 where he eventually began his career at Goodyear and Sue became a housewife and mother to six children. Sue kept busy with her children, Jimmy, Larry, Sandy, Sharon, Gary and Bob and also ran the house hold and the family business.

After the kids left the home, Jim and Sue enjoyed many activities including Washburn Athletics, travel, attending car shows, gambling for fun at the casino, watching grandchildren’s sports and playing cards and games with friends. Sue and Jim were active members of the Goodyear Retiree’s Club. The bulk of their time and the joy of retirement came in the form of collecting and restoring old cars. They were members of car clubs and attended many car shows all over the U.S. Their cars won many awards and trophies. Sue loved to go to the YWCA and exercise with her friends. She was a member for over 30 years. She was even known to teach the class when the regular teacher was absent.

She is survived by five children: Larry (Mary) Rhoades, Lawrence; Sandy (Tim) Coursen, Waverly; Sharon (Ron) Doole, Topeka; Gary (Kim) Rhoades, Topeka; Robert (Peggy) Rhoades, Topeka; 11 grandchildren, Kylie (Patrick) Rupe, Jake Rhoades, Tamra (Brandon) Dunstan, Cory Rhoades, Ryan (Kim) Doole, Katie (Jamel) Wilcox, Brett (Sara) Rhoades, Matthew (Abby) Coursen, Annie (Brandon) Dancer, Sarah (Brandon) Brugger and Dylan (Emily) Rhoades; 13 great-grandchildren, Jayden Wilcox, Ellie Kate Dunstan, Jaxon Wilcox, Grant Rupe, Annabelle Dunstan, Liam Doole, Mallory Rupe, Finley Coursen, Brecken Brugger, Dakota Coursen, Mia Rhoades and baby Rhoades and baby Brugger on the way and two siblings, Patricia (Dencil) Cavener and Dean Patterson.
